The new Mollie Ray Elementary is amazing

The extreme makeover at Mollie Ray Elementary School is now complete.

And it’s amazing!

We toured the Pine Hills campus Wednesday during a sneak peek event and you could smell the “new car” aroma.

Rebuilding the school took a year and cost $19 million. During the construction, the students were temporarily relocated to another campus. But they’ll be back on Mollie Ray’s campus when summer vacation end and classes resume on Aug. 14.

The old Mollie Ray had nearly a dozen portable classrooms. Now there are none. But a staffer told me the construction workers pre-installed utilities – pipes and such -- under the school field, so if portables are needed in the future they can be installed quickly.

What the students will find when they come back include new classrooms; offices; science lab; computer technology room; art room; music room; new cafeteria/auditorium and new technology in the classrooms. The school was built to accommodate about 500 students.

It looks more like a high school or middle school than an elementary.

By the way, Mollie Ray was named in honor of a woman who served as a school-bus driver, teacher and principal, back in the day.
