The new school year is HERE!

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Summer vacation is officially over for Orange County public school students.
The new school year begins this Monday – Aug. 14.

Orange County Public Schools – the 10th largest school district in the United States with more than 200,000 students – is back in session.

This school year will be special for students at 5 west side public schools because they have new school buildings and all the technology that goes with them.

Those schools, which have held open houses to show off their facilities.
Those schools include:
  • Mollie Ray Elementary
  • Ivey Lane Elementary
  • Carver Middle School
  • Rock Lake Elementary School
  • OCPS Academic Center for Excellence

Students and parents have voters to thank for supporting a half-cent sales tax to generate the money to build and equip these new schools. The sales tax raised $4 billion for school construction.

With school back in session motorists need to take extra care to slow down in school zones, also to watch out for school buses. When a school bus stops with the flashing lights motorists in both directions are required to stop.

Speeding in school zones and passing stopped school buses can result in costly tickets and points on your driver’s license that will make your insurance rates go up.

Good luck, students!
