Check out Orlando City Council debates

A series of forums and debates is being held during the next 2 weeks for candidates in the Orlando City Commission District 5 race.

August candidate debate
District 5 covers communities generally west of downtown, including Callahan, Parramore, Ivey Lane, Mercy Drive, Holden Heights, Rock Lake, Clear Lake, The Willows, Malibu Groves, Lake Sunset, Lake Dot, Timberleaf and Spring Lake Manor.

The candidate forums/debates are free and open to the public. They will be held:
·        Thursday, Oct. 12th, 6 p.m. at the Dr. J.B. Callahan Center, 101 N. Parramore Ave.
·        Oct. 18th, 6:30 p.m. at Parliament House, 410 N. Orange Blossom Trail
·        Oct. 19th, 6 p.m., Frontline Outreach Center, 3000 C.R. Smith St.

Incumbent Commissioner Regina Hill is seeking reelection. She is being challenged by Jibreel Ali, Ericka Dunlap, Sarah Elbadri, Betty Gelzer, Cynthia Harris and Ondria James.

Issues facing the district include gentrification that is driving up the cost of housing and forcing some longtime residents to move out of the community; the lack of affordable housing and economic opportunities, and other problems associated with poverty.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes cast, a run-off election will be held Dec. 5.
