Kids can get their lunch on at the library this summer
Children who depend on free and reduced-price lunches to keep their stomachs full during the school year don’t need to go hungry now that classes are out for summer.
Orange County Public Schools, the Orange County Library System and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are teaming up again this summer to provide free lunches to children who need it.
From Monday through Friday specialized vehicles that are part of the public-school system’s mobile lunch program will be serving up lunch at 7 Orange County public library branches.
Branches in west Orange County and the time for food service are:
· Hiawassee, 7391 W. Colonial Drive; 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
· South Trail, 4600 S. Orange Blossom Trail; 1 to 2 p.m.
· Washington Park, 5151 Raleigh St.; 1 to 2 p.m.
During a recent lunchtime, a great group of kids showed up at the Hiawassee library to receive and enjoy their lunches.
The library branches are also offering special reading programs for children during lunchtime.
Lunch will not be available on July 4th.
The lunches are available to those who are 18 and younger.
No registration is required.
The meals include milk, fruit and vegetables, grains and a protein.
Roughly 3 million children in Florida receive free or reduced-price lunch during the school year. Feeding them during the summer keeps them healthy and their brains ready to learn when school resumes.
