Commentary - People's Warrant issued for Sheriff Demings

We’re issuing a People’s Warrant for the questioning of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.

By serving this warrant on Demings you can help Cadillya Anthony get answers about the death of her son last year during an encounter with Orange County deputy sheriffs.

Ms. Anthony’s son Clarence C. J. Lake 3rd was a high school honors student with no criminal record. Prior to his death, he had no previous contact with police, though he feared one day cops would kill him.

Immediately after her son’s death, Ms. Anthony went to sheriff’s headquarters to get more information. At that time – more than a year ago -- they promised to meet with her, but they never did.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago Demings -- now a candidate for Orange County mayor -- was participating in a political forum on 98.5 The Wire radio station, Ms. Anthony called in to ask Demings about her son’s death.

Demings said he wasn’t familiar with the case but he promised to meet with her. He said this on the air. Nothing happened.

Earlier this week Ms. Anthony and some friends went to a Young Democrats meeting in downtown Orlando where Demings was making a political pitch for votes in the non-partisan race. Just after Demings finished discussing the importance of accountability and transparency in government, Ms. Anthony asked him what happened to her son.

Now face to face with the mother, Demings said that he didn’t want to discuss the case in that setting. He promised – in front of the crowd -- to meet with the mom. Click here for video of that encounter.

The next day a lowly sergeant from the Sheriff’s Office called Ms. Anthony while she was at work and wanted to discuss CJ’s death.

Ms. Anthony was shocked. There was no way she could discuss the most painful experience in her life over the phone in front of her co-workers.

Ms. Anthony refused to discuss the case with the sergeant and told her (the sergeant) that Sheriff Demings promised to meet with her and her family.

And so that’s why we’re issuing this warrant for Sheriff Demings.

If you see Demings out on the street campaigning for votes, take out your smartphone, turn on the video and ask him these 4 questions:
·        Why do you keep lying to Cadillya Anthony?
·        What happened to CJ Lake?
·        Why do you keep treating Cadillya Anthony like something you’d scrape off your shoe at the edge of the curb?
·        Do Black Lives Matter? (He’ll say All Lives Matter to avoid admitting the people of color are routinely profile and abused by police.)

Orlando ignored environmental racism, so women stepped up

  Orlando responded to requests to study pollution and the health of residents in Parramore and other historically black neighborhoods by dragging its feet for years. That’s why the Coalition of Black Women – Central Florida applied for and received a $120,000 federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to study these long-standing problems. “People’s health and lives were at risk,” said Project Manager Lawanna Gelzer. “We were tired waiting on the city. We had to act.” The grant work begins this Thursday (Dec. 3) 6:30 p.m. when the Coalition of 100 Black Women holds an online community forum to begin the fact-finding process. Recruiting 'citizen scientists' in urban Orlando

    Do you know anyone who ever wanted to be a scientist? Now they have a chance to make that dream reality right here in Orlando. The Coalition of 100 Black Women – Central Florida is looking for “citizen scientist” candidates to work under the $120,000 federal grant the organization received recently from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to study air pollution in the Parramore, Holden Heights and Mercy Drive communities.  (For more information on this grant, and the project, click here.) That’s right…WORK! The people selected as citizen scientists will be paid a stipend. To be a citizen scientist you don’t need a fancy degree. “We’re looking for people who are reliable, motivated and intellectually curious,” said Project Manager Lawanna Gelzer.
