Orlando is making it illegal for Parramore residents to offer parking

Orlando is making it illegal for Parramore residents to make extra money parking cars on their property during special events at Camping World Stadium, Amway Events Center and Exploria Stadium (Orlando City Soccer).

This Monday (9/16) the Orlando City Commission is scheduled to vote on an ordinance that will make it illegal for residents to offer parking to people attending events in the Parramore area.

For decades Parramore residents earned extra money charging $10 or $20 for parking at homes and apartments and vacant lots near event venues.

Back when the original Orlando Arena was built in the 1980s, some city officials suggested that charging for parking was a perk for Parramore residents. Many residents benefited from the parking side hustle that helped them pay bills and buy groceries.

Now the city is poised to impose this new ordinance to force people attending events in the Parramore to use the city’s new e-meter (parking system) just launched in Creative Village/UCF Downtown district that just opened in Parramore.

Coupled with skyrocketing rent, and the opening of the UCF Downtown campus, this ordinance contributes to the gentrification that is forcing longtime residents of the historically black Parramore community out of the community.

Before City Commissioners vote on this ordinance on Monday, the public will have an opportunity to voice their concerns. That discussion begins at 2 p.m. at Orlando City Hall. The meeting time in the middle of the afternoon makes it difficult for working people to attend.
