Getting a coronavirus test at Camping World Stadium in Orlando

Here is what it’s like to get a coronavirus test at Orlando's Camping World Stadium – one the testing sites Orange County opened Monday.

The testing process begins with getting an appointment by calling 407-723-5004. Appointments are mandatory. The only other requirement is you have to be an Orange County resident 18 or older.

Getting the appointment proved to be the biggest hurdle. On Monday (4/20) there was a 2-hour wait “on hold” before someone picked up.

When the call was answered, a woman took down contact information and said someone would call back. As promised, the call was returned in about two hours and the appointment setter said when and where testing would be done.

Wednesday morning (4/22) was the earliest availability.

Arriving shortly after 8 a.m. there were already 20 cars in line at Camping World Stadium on Rio Grande Avenue at Anderson Street. There were also people who walked up to the site.

Inside the stadium gate the Health Department staff set up an encampment of a dozen blue-tarp tents with generators and coolers, and lots of staff wearing masks, face shield, latex gloves, and disposable booties for the shoes.

First you must be checked in where they verify that you have an appointment. While sitting in your car they ask you to keep your windows rolled up.

They have you sign and date a legal form authorizing the test. Then you drive up to the next set of tents where another staffer verifies your identity. Then comes the test. You keep your mouth covered while exposing your nose. The technician inserts the world’s longest cotton swab up one nostril.

The swab goes so far up your nostril it might make you yelp, which is probably why they have you cover your mouth. It doesn’t hurt. It just feels weird.

The test results will be available in a few days after taking the test. A sheet they give you during the registration process instructs you how to sign up and get your test results through labcorp.com

The tests are free.
